Warehouses and distribution centers present a different set of pest pressures than a retail storefront or office suite. Large open floor plans, high-volume dock traffic, and constant movement of pallets, cardboard, and incoming freight create multiple points of entry and plenty of places for pests to go unnoticed until numbers grow. A facility that stores or ships product also carries a higher cost when pests do get in — contaminated inventory, damaged packaging, a failed customer or health department inspection, or a shutdown of a receiving area while a problem gets sorted out. For an operations or facility manager, the pest issue is rarely just the pest itself; it's the disruption to throughput and the paperwork that follows.

Rodents are usually the primary concern in this type of building. Dock doors that don't seal tight, gaps around utility penetrations, and stacked pallets against exterior walls give mice and rats an easy way in, and dry storage areas give them a reason to stay. Cockroaches tend to concentrate around break rooms, employee restrooms, and any area with food waste or moisture — cardboard storage nearby only makes conditions more favorable. Ants show up along exterior walls and near any spilled product or sugar sources, often trailing in from the perimeter. Bed bugs are less common in warehouse space itself but can turn up in employee break rooms, lockers, or seating areas, typically arriving on personal belongings rather than through the building envelope.

An inspection of a distribution facility usually starts at the dock doors and loading bays, since that's the most direct route pests use to get inside. From there it moves through receiving and staging areas, pallet racking, and any dry storage where product sits for extended periods. Break rooms, locker areas, and restrooms get checked next, followed by a walk of the interior and exterior perimeter, floor drains, and utility penetrations. The goal is to identify where pests are entering and where they're finding food, water, or shelter once they're in — not to guess based on where a sighting was reported.

Treatment follows an Integrated Pest Management approach with EPA-registered products, adjusted to what the inspection finds rather than a one-size-fits-all routine. Rodent work typically includes interior trapping, exclusion and sealing of entry points using materials like copper mesh or hardware cloth, and tamper-resistant exterior bait stations, paired with sanitation and harborage recommendations. Cockroach control relies on gel baits and insect growth regulators with crack-and-crevice treatment where needed. Ant issues are handled with species-targeted baits and liquid treatments, including carpenter ants. If bed bugs are found in break rooms or employee areas, a chemical treatment plan is the primary method, with certified canine detection available to help pinpoint activity. For facilities that need to show proof of pest management to a health department or a third-party auditor, written service reports and pest sighting logs are provided as standard documentation, and the program is built to support HACCP, AIB, and SQF audit requirements.
