Why Mosquito Control Matters
Mosquitoes were once an issue reserved for the hottest and most tropical climates. Today, things are different — rising temperatures have pushed mosquito populations into areas outside the tropics. They are established further north and stay active longer through the year. Mosquito-borne illnesses including West Nile virus, Zika, and dengue are tracked by public health agencies across the Northeast.
Beyond disease risk, mosquitoes make outdoor space unusable. Bites can swell and stay sore for days, and some people react strongly enough to need medical attention.
How Trap Systems Work
A mosquito trap system targets the breeding cycle rather than only the adults you can see. The trap presents what looks like an attractive place to lay eggs. When a gravid female lands on it, she picks up a larvicide, and carries it with her as she moves between breeding sites.
Because standing water in gutters, containers, and low spots is often scattered and hard to reach, this approach lets the mosquito carry treatment into places a technician cannot easily service directly. The larvicide interrupts development in those sites, and the exposed female's own egg-laying is affected as well.
The specific trap and larvicide products in use change from season to season as manufacturers update their lines. What stays consistent is the approach: target the breeding sites, not just the adults.
Where Traps Fit in a Mosquito Program
Traps are one component, not a standalone answer. Rest Easy uses Integrated Pest Management, which means a mosquito program starts with an inspection of the property to find what is actually producing mosquitoes — standing water, dense shaded vegetation, drainage that holds after rain.
From there a program may combine:
- Source reduction: identifying and correcting the breeding sites on the property
- Trap placement: siting trap systems where mosquito pressure is concentrated
- Targeted treatment: treating harborage areas where adults rest during the day
- Monitoring: checking and servicing equipment through the season
