ant-infestation-trailsIt’s a good thing that ants don’t carry disease, or we would be in a heap of trouble. After all, ants are everywhere. Take a stroll down a sidewalk and if there’s a piece of discarded food or a dead insect, rodent, or even lizard, there’s a good chance you’ll find a swarm of ants carting it off one piece at a time.

These small creatures are drawn in by the food and vegetation located in and around your home. It’s a good idea to learn how to find ants and how to get rid of them.

How to find ants in and around your home

The first thing you need to do is find the ants that may have invaded both inside and outside your home. The good news is that ants aren’t the best hiders in the world. Unlike insects that will hide in your home, sometimes even inside your furniture, ants tend to stay out in the open. This is great for any homeowner trying to track them down. All you need to do is look around and try to spot them. What’s even better is that they travel in large numbers, so it’s not like you’ll be looking for one tiny ant.
Inside your home is the easiest part. Just take a look around and if you see something moving in a long line on your wall or floor, there’s a good chance they’re ants. When you venture outside, look for the same thing, but keep in mind that their color may help them blend into their surroundings if they’re in the dirt somewhere. Also keep a lookout for their nest. Some nests are flush with the ground, but others protrude a bit.

How to get rid of ants that have invaded your home

Now that you know how to find ants, it’s time to get rid of them. Luckily, there are a few ways to accomplish this. Let’s take a look at a few simple ways:

  • Kill the line of ants — A quick solution is to spray a line of ants that you find, or use a powder that you can spread around. The danger here, of course, is that you’re putting poison on the ground. If you have children or small pets, that might not be a great idea.
  • Destroy the nest — If you find the entrance to their nest outside, pick up a product designed to fit over the hole and deliver a poison throughout the colony.
  • Bait the critters — Baiting systems will draw the insects inside, where they pick up pieces of slow-acting poison, thinking it’s food. This poison is then carried into their nest, where it eliminates all the ants inside.
